Description
Vintage Blue & White Covered Pottery Bowl Ming Dynasty Reproduction (?) • Floral MotifOrigin: This lovely round bowl is probably a reproduction of the original. The insignia, translated means
"Made in the Wanli Era of the Great Ming Dynasty."
The Wanli era ran from 1573-1620.
Chinese writing of that era was usually written vertically from right-to-left. This inscription runs horizontally left to right, which is a Western convention.
Size:
Approximate size 5" diameter x 3" h.
Weight: Bowl weighs approximately 1 lb 1.6 oz
Condition: Good. There are a few minor chips or slight rough edges on the bottom of the top rim. See pictures. The chips are only slightly noticeable from the underside of the top and does not detract from the bowl.
Technique: Blue and white glazed pottery with dragon designs.
Top has perforations (for crickets?).
Was at one time used with
potpourri
and the scent carries through the dish openings.
The white tag on the bowl is a puzzle. A Chinese Professor mentioned there was a late Qing dynasty era name (the Tongzhi era) that ran from 1861 to 1875, so if the intent of the tag is to record that period 1862-1875, it might just be an honest mistake (since that era only began in November of 1861). We are unsure of the significance of the tag.
I am no expert in Chinese pottery and am listing this item that was in a relative's smoke free home for years.
